dog fouling

Ward 15 Maryhill/Kelvin, including Kelvindale, is an ‘enhanced enforcement’ area of the Clean Glasgow Dog Fouling Campaign until 31 January. We are encouraged to report instances of dog fouling with as much detail as possible, as irresponsible dog owners will alter their behaviour if they believe that there is a chance of them being caught! The number to call is the Glasgow City Council Customer Care Centre 0800 0277027.

police & community meeting

grit bins etc.

Kelvindale seems to suffer from a rather arbitrary council rule that you can’t have grit bins closer than 200m to one another. Given the number of steep hills and tight corners in Kelvindale this makes for some pretty dangerous conditions (Weymouth Drive, Winton Drive, Balcarres Avenue). The ‘Find your nearest Grit Bin’ service on the council website isn’t working either, so if the roads and/or pavements are treacherous around you, please report it to the council on 0800 37 36 35. Here’s the winter maintenance page of the City Council website.

Pestering them might be the only way.

flooding on Great Western Road

UPDATE 2 December from David Russell, Roads Manager at LES via John Letford:

Following the last flooding event at this location, an extensive investigation was undertaken to ascertain the cause of the flooding.  Previously, the cause was thought to be fallen leaves covering the gully grates forcing water to accumulate at the location.  However, the investigation indicated that there was a partially collapsed carrier pipe which channeled water from the roadside gullies to a manhole in the central reservation and, from there, into the surface water sewer.

Consequently, works were undertaken to repair this pipe and these are now complete and no recurrences of further flooding has been noted. Notwithstanding this fact, my engineer will continue to closely monitor this location in order to ensure that this situation remains.

this from Councillor John Letford:

Work is currently underway at Great Western Rd at the Pond. Land and Environmental Services (LES) have dug 2m down and found a blocked pipe, which has now been fixed. Hopefully, when the work ceases, the continual flooding also ceases.

snow wardens

this from Councillor Martin Rhodes:

Last winter, for the first time, Land and Environmental Services (LES) and Glasgow Community Safety Services (GCSS) undertook a snow warden pilot. GCSS recruited volunteer snow wardens from their established Neighbourhood Improvement Volunteer network and LES provided them with training, grit and snow kits. The 2011 pilot was a success, and this winter it is hoped to increase the number of snow wardens to provide one in each of the fifty six neighbourhoods in the city. Once again wardens have been recruited from the established NIV network and already LES/GCSS have four confirmed Wardens for the Kelvindale/Kelvinside Neighbourhood.

Recruitment is an ongoing process for Neighbourhood Improvement Volunteers, if anyone is interested they should call Carol Lang, tel. 276 7428 for more information.

old maps of Kelvindale

We’ve heard from the secretary of Jordanhill Community Council, who has several maps of the Kelvindale area going back to the late 1890s, and was wondering if anyone in Kelvindale would be interested in them, or in writing a history of Kelvindale.

If you’re interested let us know at kelvindalecc@hotmail.co.uk and we’ll pass on the details.

Botanic Gardens Tree Collection

this from the Friends of Glasgow Botanic Gardens:

Good morning all

You may be aware of a project being developed by the Friends of Glasgow Botanic Gardens, namely the National Tree Collections of Scotland.

This is to tell the story of the unique tree collections throughout Scotland, including the Botanic Gardens, as well as the fascinating story of the tree collectors/explorers of the past, such as David Douglas and their links with the Gardens of Scotland.

This early stage of the work is being funded by the Central Scotland Green Network to determine:
– the full scope of the project
– project costs
– ideas for the best way of interpreting the information in the Gardens

A key part of the work is to involve local community groups, and indeed all users of the Botanic Gardens.

With this in mind a drop-in workshop is being held in the Kibble Palace on Thursday 8th November 10.30 am – 4.00 pm. and on display will be our current thoughts and ideas.

We look forward to seeing as many visitors as possible – no pre-arrangements are necessary – just drop in and discuss ideas for the project.

Please pass this invitation to any who may be interested
We look forward to seeing you
Regards

Brian Atkinson
Chairman, Friends of Glasgow Botanic Gardens
